The other day, I was uploading blog pins to Pinterest. As I filled in the tags, typing out terms like “Black woman,” “women empowerment,” and “blogger,” it felt like any other routine task. Yet, somewhere in that quiet moment, a profound memory surfaced. It wasn’t a specific event, but rather a deeply familiar feeling I’ve carried for years—a sudden, quiet appreciation for exactly who God made me to be.
Learning to Appreciate My Identity
There was a pivotal point in my life when I truly realized the depth of my identity. I am incredibly proud to be an African American woman. This pride doesn’t stem from a place of thinking I am better than anyone else, nor does it require comparison. Instead, it is a pure, grounded sense of gratitude.
I am grateful for the culture, the rich history, and the effortless creativity, resilience, and strength that have been meticulously woven through generations. When I look at our music, our traditions, our hairstyles, our stories, and the undeniable ways we continue to influence the global landscape, I can’t help but marvel at the beauty of it all. It serves as a gentle reminder that God never creates without intention—and He created me with divine intention, too.
Honoring Those Who Came Before Us
As I allowed myself to reflect, my thoughts naturally turned toward the generations who came before us. I think of those who endured immense hardships and carried burdens we will never fully comprehend. These men and women pushed forward through suffocating circumstances that could have easily broken their spirits.
Because of their heavy sacrifices, many of us now step into opportunities they could only dream of. That doesn’t mean our modern lives are perfect or that challenges don’t exist. However, it does remind me that every single generation builds a floor for the next one to stand on. For that foundation, I hold a deep, reverent gratitude.
Shifting from Environment to Assignment
| Operating in Environmental Weight | Standing in Purposeful Growth |
| Allowing the noise, chaos, and heavy environments around you to dictate your internal peace. | Appreciating where you came from while acknowledging it is not your final destination. |
| Feeling limited or defined by the generational struggles and patterns you grew up around. | Celebrating your roots while intentionally building a soft, radiant future. |
| Forgetting that your journey is a story of divine intentionality and becoming. | Walking through new doors with the confidence that God knew exactly what He was doing when He made you. |
Honoring Your Roots Without Staying There
Growing up, I was frequently surrounded by things that never fully felt aligned with who I truly was. There was noise, there was chaos, and there were environments that felt incredibly heavy at times. Even as a child, I remember sensing a quiet whisper within telling me there had to be more. It wasn’t an arrogant thought; it was a soul-deep awareness that I was being called to something different.
Looking back now, I can fully appreciate the soil I grew up in while acknowledging that it was never meant to be my final destination. Those raw experiences shaped me, taught me, and strengthened my capacity, but they do not get to define the entire story of my becoming.
The Beauty of Becoming
As I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that deep gratitude and organic growth can exist in the exact same space. You can fiercely appreciate your roots while courageously building something entirely new. You can honor your past without feeling limited by it, carrying your unique story with you as fuel rather than a weight. That is the essence of stepping into your truest era: it’s not about rejecting your journey, but embracing how every step led you here.
Anchored in Truth: A Scriptural Reference Block
When the world tries to fit you into a box or make you forget the divinity woven into your DNA, return to the truth of how you were designed. Your heritage and your existence are intentional.
Psalm 139:14 (BSB)
“I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
God did not make a mistake when He chose your timeline, your culture, your family line, or your unique gifts. When you honor who He made you to be, you honor the Creator Himself.
Reflective Journal Prompts
Grab your journal, light a warm, anchoring candle (like Smoked Oud or Sweet Amber to ground your spirit), and sit quietly with these reflections this week:
- What generational traits or cultural strengths do I carry that I am most grateful for? How can I intentionally honor those strengths in my daily life?
- Where am I confusing my history with my destiny? In what ways am I still allowing a heavy past environment to dictate the soft, luxury era I am trying to build today?
- What does “honoring my roots while growing” look like for me practically right now? How can I thank God for where I’ve been while boldly walking through the new doors He is opening?
